Directions From the border of Costa Rica:
First, make sure you have the necessary
paperwork for the car before heading for the border. If you
are not sure of the current laws, its a good idea to call the US embassy and
they can direct you in the right direction.
Head north from Liberia, Costa Rica toward the border on the Pan-American highway (aka the Costanera).
Once you have crossed the border into Nicaragua continue north to the
town of Rivas about 30 minutes away and is the
next major city past San Juan Del Sur.
In Rivas, pass the Texaco and look
for a road sign for TOLA. While driving towards TOLA, "Rancho
Santana" signs will lead you in the right direction, until you eventually pass the ranch's white archway entrance
along the left side of the road.
Once in Tola, come to the Police station and
make a left, go three blocks and make a right at the sign that says "Rancho
Santana" you should now be on a dirt road. After you follow the
dirt road for some time the dirt road eventually widens & there is one fork
that you could easily follow to the right, in the wrong direction. Make sure
you make a left here. This should be about 15 kilometers after TOLA (could be
twenty minutes to an hour depending
on the roads). This turn is after Rancho Santana and Hotel Iguana entrances
another few kilometers down the road.
Once there, you will come to a fork in the
road that goes up a hill and over a bridge to your left at the
Bar La Tica. Make a left onto this road and go over the bridge. The road is paved
just ahead. Relax,
your here. Follow for
two miles and when the road hugs around a large rancho on the left, you made
it!
